Having been accused by the Jewish leaders of violating the Sabbath, Jesus explained that the Sabbath was established for human beings and, like his Father, he was not required to keep the Sabbath, effectively claiming he was equal to God. This enraged the Jewish leaders even more, causing the Jews to look for a means to kill him. Rather than stand down, Jesus launched into a detailed explanation in John 5:16-47 about who he is and his relationship with God the Father. In this first section (John 5:16-24), Jesus explained that not only is he equal to God the Father in his person, he is also equal to God the Father in his works, in his power, in his judgment and in his honor. Jesus then made a clear statement about how a person can have eternal life.
